Is vegan dog food healthy for dogs? What does science say?

This series of blogs looks at the scientific research into whether vegetarian and vegan dog food is healthy for your dog. This blog summaries at a scientific study published in 2009, in the British Journal of Nutrition by W. Y. Brown et al.

The paper is called “An experimental meat-free diet maintained hematological characteristics
in sprint-racing sled dogs”

Summary – Is Vegan dog food healthy?

A nutritionally complete vegetarian / vegan diet is fine for dogs, even very active dogs like racing huskies. The huskies fed a vegetarian diet had the same blood test results as those fed on a meat diet. They all the dogs did same amount of exercise. Vegetarian and meat based foods have similar ingredients.

Meet Anna & Mo from Clean & Natural in this months Ethical Business: Ethical Life.

Anna & Mo, from cleanandnatural.co.uk, began their ethical journey during a distressing time for their family. Their middle child had severe eczema and reacted badly to the conventional, petrochemical based treatment. Following a tip from a friend, they discovered that Shea Butter was the soothing solution they needed: two years on and both their family and their business have blossomed!

Ethical Business: Ethical Life – The Crafty Kim Searle

Anna even has a “Badass Feminist Killjoy” floral banner on her desk! Kim will be attending lots of Vegan fairs in the coming months, and also runs workshops regularly!

So, Kim, how did you get into crafts and textiles?

I started making things to sell when I was about 16, I really loved making things but have always been a realist and knew that I couldn’t keep buying materials and that there were only so many things I could make for myself and friends.

The Revolution is Coming (and it sounds and tastes goooood!)

On Saturday I popped in to Manchester’s 100% Vegan diner. My socks were blown so far off I never did find them again….

To put this into perspective, I have spent a bit of time in Berlin while working for the Free Software Foundation Europe. Every time I visit, I come home feeling like I have had a cultural “dressing down” from a city who knows how to “do” Veganism and Ethical Living in a way that makes our efforts look terrifyingly “English” (pale… prudish… “down with that sort of thing”)
